The First Maharashtra
Provincial Conference held at Bassein (Vasai)
in Thane District on 6 May 1921, under the
presidentship of Shrimat Shankaracharya of
Karveer Peeth, resolved to establish a National University in
Maharashtra in memory of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar
Tilak and to honour his inspiring leadership, profound scholarship, and
lifelong contribution to India’s freedom and progress.
Accordingly, the Tilak
Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was established and later registered (Registration
No.F-42) under the Societies Registration Act,
1860 on 30 September 1940 and under the Bombay
Public Trust Act, 1950 on 3 November 1952.
