Since the time of the industrial revolution, western countries have been leaders of technology. The colonialism in 17th and 19th centuries helped increase their spheres of dominance world over. However, the two world wars, thereafter, changed the equations.
In the post-world war-II scenario, Japan has emerged from ashes to become a major industrial force in the world. Be it heavy engineering industries, electronics, or automobile industry, Japan has taken the lead and flooded the world market with quality goods at affordable prices. Apart from Industry, Japanese work culture is also a lesson in discipline and perfection and is being adopted by many other countries. With growing affluence, the Japanese are major contributors to the tourism industry. Today their presence is evident at every tourist spot around the world.
India-Japan friendship dates long back since the days of Rash-Bihari Bose’s stay in Japan, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose seeking military help against the British raj in 1940s and later during the Tokyo Tribunal when Justice Radha Binod Pal voted for Japanese wartime captives calling them ‘not guilty’ against the alliance jurors. India was one of the foremost countries to sign San Francisco Peace Treaty recognizing Japan as a new peaceful nation. The seeds of friendships needed some time to bear fruit in late 90s when Y2K problem was haunting the world and the emergence of Indian IT experts surprised the world, including Japan. In last 25 odd years, India and Japan have since become Strategic Partners in areas like Defense, Manufacturing amongst others.
Obviously, there is a great demand for Japanese language teachers, translators, interpreters and software professionals who are proficient in Japanese and finally bilingual tourist guides. Technical literature in Japan is available in Japanese only. Given this fact, Japanese language is ideal for Indian students for better career opportunities.
TMV had started part time courses in Japanese language from year 2004. At Present, TMV is the only university in Western India to successfully sustain a full time BA in Japanese Language since 2008 (an Undergraduate Program) and also an MA in Japanese, (a Post Graduate Program) since 2011. TMV has Japanese native teachers and experienced, qualified Indian teachers as faculty members. The Japan Foundation, New Delhi, has consistently supported in creation, monitoring and aiding for the success of these two programs.
TMV has tie-ups with 8 Universities in Japan for academic exchange, namely Hiroshima, Osaka, Kanazawa, Saitama, Kanda, Kansaigaidai, Graduate Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, Asia and Ninjal.
TMV also assists in employment by arranging for campus interviews since 2020-21.
