Welcome to Japanese Language

• To provide accessibility towards higher Education

• To impart Quality Education

• To reach the unreached.

• To provide fine blend of traditional and modern sciences.

• To equip the students with skills to face global challenges.

Apart from achieving higher proficiency through the rigorous coaching in language, from wider perspective, we want our students to acquire a deep understanding of Japanese culture. We make sure that students get ample chance to interact both formally and informally with the Japanese people on multiple occasions and thus they master their cross-cultural knowledge and communication skills, too. Activities like speech contest, recitation competition, workshops / demonstration on different Japanese cultural aspects like Japanese Food, Japanese Flower arrangement (Ikebana), Japanese Calligraphy (Shodou) and paper folding art (Origami), Tea Ceremony (Sadou) and lectures on various topics are organized. Song Competition and Kanji Contest are held once in a year. Students are encouraged to participate in all India level Japanese Speech contest and regional song competitions etc.

The Department of Japanese Language started in a humble way with open courses in 2004 and went on to introduce BA in 2008, followed by MA in 2011, with constant support from Japan Foundation, New Delhi. Today, TMV is the only University in Western India to successfully sustain BA and MA courses. The vision of the Department is to emerge as the Centre of Excellence for Japanese studies in India. In alignment to its mission of equipping students with Japanese language skills as well as professional skills, the courses include subjects such as Japanology, practical Japanese. Use of Task-based Teaching method ensures that the students are engaged and at their creative best. The faculty members of the Department form the strongest pillar and contribute through various projects like textbook creation and training workshops apart from the regular teaching. Guest lectures and webinars by Indian and Japanese experts enable our students to get maximum learning, beyond the scope of their respective courses. Various contests and cultural festivals organized by the Department go a long way in building the students’ interest. TMV has tie-ups with eight Japanese universities, leading to multiple opportunities for student as well as faculty exchange and scholarships. Keeping with the times, online interactions and career guidance webinars are being organized. Focused recruitment drives attract reputed companies to TMV and offer the best placements to our students. Since its inception, the Department of Japanese Laguage, TMV has emerged as an eminent institution imparting quality education and aspires to grow exponentially with new initiatives and collaborations.
Since the time of the industrial revolution, western countries have been leaders of technology. The colonialism in 17th and 19th centuries helped increase their spheres of dominance world over. However, the two world wars, thereafter, changed the equations. In the post-world war-II scenario, Japan has emerged from ashes to become a major industrial force in the world. Be it heavy engineering industries, electronics, or automobile industry, Japan has taken the lead and flooded the world market with quality goods at affordable prices. Apart from Industry, Japanese work culture is also a lesson in discipline and perfection and is being adopted by many other countries. With growing affluence, the Japanese are major contributors to the tourism industry. Today their presence is evident at every tourist spot around the world. India-Japan friendship dates long back since the days of Rash-Bihari Bose’s stay in Japan, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose seeking military help against the British raj in 1940s and later during the Tokyo Tribunal when Justice Radha Binod Pal voted for Japanese wartime captives calling them ‘not guilty’ against the alliance jurors. India was one of the foremost countries to sign San Francisco Peace Treaty recognizing Japan as a new peaceful nation. The seeds of friendships needed some time to bear fruit in late 90s when Y2K problem was haunting the world and the emergence of Indian IT experts surprised the world, including Japan. In last 25 odd years, India and Japan have since become Strategic Partners in areas like Defense, Manufacturing amongst others. Obviously, there is a great demand for Japanese language teachers, translators, interpreters and software professionals who are proficient in Japanese and finally bilingual tourist guides. Technical literature in Japan is available in Japanese only. Given this fact, Japanese language is ideal for Indian students for better career opportunities. TMV had started part time courses in Japanese language from year 2004. At Present, TMV is the only university in Western India to successfully sustain a full time BA in Japanese Language since 2008 (an Undergraduate Program) and also an MA in Japanese, (a Post Graduate Program) since 2011. TMV has Japanese native teachers and experienced, qualified Indian teachers as faculty members. The Japan Foundation, New Delhi, has consistently supported in creation, monitoring and aiding for the success of these two programs. TMV has tie-ups with 8 Universities in Japan for academic exchange, namely Hiroshima, Osaka, Kanazawa, Saitama, Kanda, Kansaigaidai, Graduate Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, Asia and Ninjal. TMV also assists in employment by arranging for campus interviews since 2020-21.
