| Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth entered in to the field of Distance
Education in 1985 with the establishment of
Faculty of Distance Education (FDE ) with
its institutional aim of promoting national education and nationalism,
faith in democracy and sense of civic responsibilities,
through the curriculam of different Programmes, and with its faculty
objective of reaching the unreached, the deprived section of our society.
B.A. (Visharad) Social Sciences was the only Programme on offer till
2000.
Though Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was
aware of the network and system of Distance Education in India and
the world around, it was in the year 1991, when FDE appeared in the
Directory of Distance Education in India, published by Association
of Indian University (AIU) and Commonwealth of Learning (COL), FDE
became part and parcel of this network. FDE Started interacting with
other Open and Distance learning Institutions in India, which gave
it an impetus for its development.
The Development assistance
provided by Distance Education Council (DEC) IGNOU, New Delhi,
in the 9th Plan initiated a new stage of
development in the history of FDE. With financial assistance
received from DEC in IXth and Xth plan,
many projects could be undertaken, such
as Development of Study material , Launching of new programmes.
Translations of Study material, Study Center Development ,
Quality improvement , and use of Technology .
According to the guidelines given by
DEC for Impact Assessment a Self Study Report
and Self Analysis Report was submitted to DEC, IGNOU
New Delhi in 2003 2004. In this connection
the DEC Expert committee visited the Department
On 6th 7th October 2004, the team gave a satisfactory report
about the visit.
Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth FDE has submitted a proposal for the approval of programmes
to Distance Education Council, New Delhi, in June 2004, which is in
process.
At
present total 28 programmes are on offer at FDE.
Following
Criteria wise input is itself self-explanatory
(I) Curricular Aspect :
The
curricula of programmes are designed by subject committees (equivalent
to Boards of Studies) consisting of in house faculty
members (as programme coordinators) and subject experts from
outside. Institutional mission and goals
are taken into consideration while formulating
the curriculum. Curricula, are regularly
revised and updated through
the feedback obtained from students, counselors, and suggestions
of the experts and remarks of the Academic Council.
Components
such as fieldwork, laboratory work, project work have been incorporated
in various programmes.
In
order to ensure quality and relevance of programmes, involvement
of experts in the field is ascertained. Social needs
and job opportunities are taken into
consideration while defining programme objectives
and curricular content.
(II) Teaching Learning and Evaluation :
We
are trying our level best in providing appropriate teaching
learning experiences to our learners. The study
material has been developed in house, by
the academic faculty, initially with the help of senior colleagues
in the post graduation department of Vidyapeeth. For professional
programmes study material is developed by the FDE with
the help of outside experts and members of the subject committee.
Study
material is prepared basically in
print medium in SIM mode for most of the programmes.
It is supplemented by audio cassettes
and guidance through video CD and audio CD. The
other avenues of learning provided for students
include E Kesari, a weekly supplement, containing syllabus
related articles.
In
order to maintain the effectiveness of the evaluation methodology
evaluation is made in two ways Internal Evaluation
through assignments , project work, field work (according
to the nature of the programme) and External Evaluation
through semester system or annual examination system. Regularity
is maintained in the conduct of examination and announcement of
results.
Maximum
efforts are being made to use appropriate technologies to make communication
more effective.
V) Student Support Services :
FDE
has a Student Support Services Cell , all the necessary information
regarding academic and administrative matter is provided
in the prospectus of every programme. Provision of academic and
administrative services is a permanent
feature at the headquarters and study centers. These
services are also provided at Contact Programme centers. Administrative
services are also provided at administrative centers.
Awards
have been instituted for the toppers in the Annual Examination. We
plan to provided the facility of on line registration for students
and on line communication with study centers.
(VI) Other Healthy Practices :
The
following points may be mentioned as some of the innovative
features of our Institution.
* Personal
Guidance/Attention in different activities satisfying psychological needs of
distant learners.
* Projects
undertaken and carried out with team work.
We
are committed to the goal of striving for the all round development
of deprived students and inculcating in them the spirit of nationality
and national integrity and faith in democracy.
The
feedback given by our past students through letters and personal
interaction indicates that we have been successful, to a large extent,
in reaching our goal.
